she held her beloved in her arms, feeling the body grow cold and tremble against her own. she watched, transfixed, as life slowly slipped away.
“dont be afraid,” she whispered at her ear, her voice tender. “everything will be alright… shhh.”
she rocked her gently, as one would soothe a child, repeating in broken murmurs:
“i love you. i love you.”
and when she felt the final breath drawing near, she leaned in and kissed her.
one last kiss. a farewell disguised as devotion.
the last breath left the lips of the woman she loved and found refuge in her lungs, filling at last the immeasurable emptiness of her soul. in that moment, she felt alive for the first time in her entire existence.
